David Riff

David Riff is a writer, translator, artist, and curator based in Moscow and Berlin. He studied cultural anthropology at SUNY New Paltz (US) and slavonic studies and art history at the Ruhr University Bochum (Germany). He has written extensively on contemporary art in Russia, contributing to Flash Art, springerin, Moscow Art Magazine, documenta 12 magazine, as well as Rethinking Marxism. Riff was contributing editor of the internet culture portal OpenSpace.ru from 2008 to 2010. A member of the workgroup Chto delat and co-editor of its newspaper since 2003, Riff also works in artistic collaborations, and participated in the 52nd Venice Biennale in collaboration with Dmitry Gutov on a project called the Karl Marx School of the English Language. In 2010, Riff co-curated (with Cosmin Costinas and Ekaterina Degot) Shockworkers of the Mobile Image, the first edition of the Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art in Ekaterinburg, Russia. He currently teaches art history at the Rodchenko School for Photography and Multimedia in Moscow.
